Checklist: Hiking Kit

While your list of supplies can vary greatly here is a list of some recommended items for camping:

Clothing

Sturdy Belt that can be connected to rope and carabiners for climbing and rescue
Clothing including layers, jacket, emergency rain gear, socks, etc.
Footwear such as hiking boots, sturdy shoes, socks
Panty Hose for warmth, protection, securing bandages, tourniquet, water filter
Rain Gear such as a lightweight plastic poncho
Sunglasses
Trekking Poles for balance, safety, and reducing fatigue
Watch

Food, Water, Hydration Pack

Food can include jerky, nuts, energy bars, fruit, full meals, etc.
Hydration Pack to carry supplies, food, and water
Water stored in the hydration bladder
Water Filter and water containers

Illumination & Batteries

Spare Batteries for flashlight, headlamp, and other devices
Flashlight with long life and uses the same batteries as the headlamp
Headlamp that is waterproof and has adjustable beam

Safety Gear

Compass, GPS, Maps
Fire starters including two sources of fire, kindling, and starters
First Aid Kit with bandaids, bandages, alcohol swabs, moleskin, snake bite kit, etc.
Nametag engraved on bright metal that can double as a signal mirror
Paracord or rope for securing a shelter, acting as a clothesline, etc.
Shelter to protect from the elements: tent or tube tent, bivy, or space blanket
Signals such as a mirror, bright objects, whistle, etc.
Tape (duct, medical, electrical) for repairs, splints, etc.
Whistle that is multi-frequency and very loud for signaling
Zip Ties for repairs, making a shelter, etc.

Miscellaneous Items

Climbing grade Carabiner(s) can be used for a variety of purposes
Camera or binoculars (optional but highly recommended)
Knife or multi-tool
Knife Sharpener that can sharpen straight and serrated blades
Personal Items: insect repellent, sunscreen, soap, toilet paper, towel, etc.
Small, absorbent Towel is a very useful item to carry

All of these items can fit comfortably in a medium- to larger-sized hydration pack.
