Knife Mechanisms

  • Manual Opening knives require the user to open the blade 100% from the closed to open position. Manual knives have NO mechanisms to assist in opening the blade.
  • Assisted Opening knives require the user to engage in opening the blade but they have a mechanism that assists the blade once the blade passes a certain position. The user starts to open the knife and then the mechanism takes over to complete opening the blade.
  • Automatic or Auto Opening knives have a button, slide, or switch that causes the blade to open. The user does NOT have to directly handle the blade.
  • Fixed Blade knives are permanently open and normally come with a sheath to protect the blade edge. These are generally the strongest and most rugged knives.
  • Butterfly Knives, or Balis, open and close using two handles that rotate around the front and back of the blade
