Medium Term

Medium-term foods require minimal preparation such as adding boiling water. Most products are free-dried. Many cook in their own packages and require no cooking vessels. There are a wide variety of menu choices and many of these meals are quite tasty and nutritious. You can purchase these meals online, at outdoor stores, and at retailers that have camping gear. Meals are reasonably priced at about $4-$5 per serving.

These foods often require boiling water. There are a number lightweight and affordable stoves specifically designed to boil water. Some Flash Boil stoves can boil two cups of water in about two minutes.

Most meals are sealed in a ziplock pouch. Open the pouch, remove the moisture absorbing packet (if present), add the specified amount of boiling water, stir thoroughly (very important), seal the pouch, and wait for the amount of time specified on the package. You may want to stir the contents again midway through the cooking time. When finished you can eat the meal directly from the pouch or serve onto plates. A long stirring spoon is very nice to have when preparing these meals.

Be sure to carry ample fuel for your stove. Take altitude into account when cooking. Higher elevations require longer cooking time and more fuel. See this article on Cooking at High Altitude.
